10 Budget Hidden Gems You Should Be Playing in Commander – 05 Heartwood Storyteller

Seeing a much-needed reprint in Time Spiral Remastered is Heartwood Storyteller, a Treefolk that offers a Group Hug approach in Commander. For each time a player casts a noncreature spell, each of that player’s opponents may draw a card, allowing you to subtly punish players who aren’t putting out creatures during a game in Commander. While Edric, Spymaster of Trest is the more offensively-minded with these effects, don’t discount what Heartwood Storyteller can do on a more passive level.
Given that Heartwood Storyteller can aid everyone in a Commander pod, the Treefolk doesn’t come across as threatening on the battlefield, meaning it can leverage the Group Hug aspect fantastically well, while also drawing you cards throughout a game. More interestingly, Heartwood Storyteller slides into any Treefolk Commander strategy, perhaps in a casual Quickbeam, Upstart Ent or Fangorn, Tree Shepherd with The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth’s release.
